How to Setup a Surround Sound System
Have you finally got the multi media system you’ve always been dreaming about, whether it is a game console, home theater systems, a nice new TV or something else? But now you want to have an equally nice surround sound system you can work with as well.
So if you have moved house to Geneva, Nyon, Morges, Lausanne or Vevey recently and you decided to make some changes to your home, then you probably had a chance to make new electronics part of the deal. After the moving company leaves and your relocation is complete you should start planning for making the changes you had in mind. Well before moving on to make this work you will need to ensure you have the entire media system setup the right way.
There are a few things you need to do before you tackle all those speaker cables, as the following tips will point out:
You should examine the speakers to ensure you know what type you’re using. Most commonly the setups are 2.1, 5.1 and 7.1. The first includes two front speakers and a subwoofer. The second one includes two speakers, a central speaker, two surround speakers and the subwoofer. The last one includes all of the above plus two additional back speakers.
To begin working you will need to place the subwoofer near the center of the home theater. The subwoofer has omnidirectional sound which makes them a bit harder to control if you place them against a wall, since their bass will amplify. This is the reason why you will need to place it in a location that will allow its sounds to spread evenly, allowing you to control your levels with greater ease.
Next you will need to place the front speakers in front of each side of your TV, but ensure you have your speakers clearly marked so they can go on each correct side. The last thing you want to have is reversed channels, which could really mess up your gaming until you figured out you made a mistake.
Place the front speakers to each side of the TV. Wall mounting of television sets will allow you to make things easier on yourself. Make sure that if the speakers are marked that they are on the correct side. Front speakers should be placed equidistant from either side of the TV, usually around three feet from each side. You need to be able to work on a symmetrical triangle between both speakers and the center of your seating area. Your front speakers should also be placed at a 45° angle as well for optimal results.
Raise your front speakers up high for best potential results, allowing them to be roughly at ear level with the audience. You can use speaker stands or the surround sound systems entertainment setup to make that happen.
Place the central speaker right above or below your TV. The center channel will serve as a bridge between your left and right channels, allowing you to keep dialog synced with the mouths moving on screen and whenever sound pans from left to right and vice versa. You should once again angle the center channel up or down so it points at the audience, but you should never place it behind the TV as the sound waves will be blocked.
Place your surround channel speakers on the sides of your viewing area. They will be the solution that allows the sounds to create an almost complete circle of sounds around the viewers. They will not transmit nearly as much sound as the front speakers, but they will enhance the sound with their enveloping effect. You should place the speakers in such a way as they would be pointed directly at the audience for optimal results. If you’re not using a 7.1 setup then you should make sure you place them a bit behind the viewers instead. Raise the speakers about two feet above ear level for the best potential results. Place the back channels right behind the viewing area, but as close as possible to each other to create a perfect bubble of sound for the complete experience.
